The Vet Tech degree at Vet Tech provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge about animals and the veterinary science. The first two semesters of the program are the foundational classes. Courses in animal sciences, veterinary physiology, veterinary biology, veterinary pathology, veterinary surgery, animal handling, animal behavior, and basic pet care are offered. The third and final semester focuses on advanced topics including advanced laboratory procedures and equipment, advanced mathematics, computer programming, and animal communication. All classes take place at a Vet Tech College Park campus in Maryland.
Upon successful completion of the Vet Tech Bachelor’s degree program, students will be prepared for the veterinary career of their dreams. Upon graduation, students will be eligible for employment in animal care, veterinary medicine, and other related veterinary careers.
At Vet Tech, students can choose between the Master of Science in Veterinary Technology (MSVT) or the Bachelor’s degree program. Both of these programs provide students with the foundation necessary for their future careers. Students can either earn a bachelors of science in veterinary technology or the master’s of science in veterinary technology. Both of these programs are offered as two years of full time study, although the MSVT program is usually two years shorter than the Bachelor’s degree program.
A major component of the Vet Tech degree program at Vet Tech is its veterinary biology curriculum. This course prepares students for a career that involves working with animals, such as the veterinarian, vet tech, and animal care specialist. The course includes biology of animals, physiology of animals, life histories, diagnostic techniques, nutrition, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases, and the use of laboratory tools and equipment. Veterinary technology graduates will also learn about the ethical principles of animal care and compassion. After completing the coursework required for this degree, students will be prepared to apply that information to their role as an animal care professional.
Courses in animal handling will cover various methods of animal handling including pet obedience training, teaching methods, and the importance of keeping animals calm and comfortable in their environment. This coursework involves learning the basics of animal husbandry and handling. The coursework also provides students with the skills necessary for the role of a licensed animal health care technician, a position that includes giving injections and performing medical procedures. Courses in pet behavior and animal health care also include the theories and tools of good pet care.
Students who complete the Vet Tech Bachelor’s degree program will also need to attend the Campus Outreach Program, which is designed to introduce students to the campus and to students’ new surroundings. The program is available for all majors, but is especially useful for veterinary technologists who may be living on or off campus.
At the conclusion of the Vet Tech Bachelors degree program, students will have the opportunity to participate in clinical experiences that help prepare them for the job market and advancement in the Vet Tech profession. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared for a satisfying career in veterinary medicine or animal care.
To get into the Vet Tech program, students must first fill out an application for admission. The application must be submitted by the student at the Vet Tech Institute’s Department of Human Resources. Students must then submit letters of recommendations from professors and former classmates.
Once accepted into the Vet Tech program, students are encouraged to participate in the campus tours, extracurricular activities, and other events that the college and institution hold in order to build a network of fellow Vet Tech students. Students can join or start clubs and organizations throughout campus as well as volunteer in a number of different campus-based programs such as the Animal Welfare Club. {WAC. or the Environmental Club, both of which are specifically dedicated to educating students about the environment and animal conservation.
